When we first ogled the set pics from One Direction's new music video, "Steal My Girl," we were just wondering how sumo wrestlers, Danny DeVito, and Liam Payne in a marching band suit could possibly fit into one video. However, the vid is actually causing major controversy! Animal rights organization PETA has blasted the band for using chimpanzees in their music video.
The organization told Mail Online that the animal trainer who brought the chimp has been "cited numerous times for shocking violations" of the US Animal Welfare Act. Among the violations, this includes "failure to provide adequate ventilation, clean cages and proper feeding."
They're asking that the 1D guys cut out the scenes with the chimps, pledge to never work with wild animals again, and donate a portion of the proceeds of their songs to a chimpanzee rescue organization.
While we don't know if PETA has gotten in touch with the band, based on the photos we've seen, it looks like the chimp was at least treated nicely on set. Louis Tomlinson, in particular, got really close to him!
What do you think about this controversy? Were you surprised?
